3 Most Common Pool Equipment Problems

You are about to find out about the three most common pool equipment problems in the industry. Hopefully this article will educate you, but let's hope your issues are quick, inexpensive fixes.

Equipment comes in almost any shape and size. Identifying what is wrong and being knowledgeable is half the battle, expending the labor time is a quarter of the battle, and having the right equipment is the final quarter. So let's focus on the knowledge.

The most common problem is related to pool filters. Filters need ongoing maintenance to perform properly and most pool owners, even if they don't like to admit it, tend to neglect their pool care.

Sand and DE filters must be backwashed occasionally. That means reversing the flow of water through the filter to push all of the debris out of the filter and into your yard or a drain. Cartridge filters must be taken apart and the cartridges washed off or even soaked in acid occasionally.

The best way to know if a pool filter needs to be cleaned is based on the pressure gauge on the top or side of the filter. If the pressure changes around 10 psi it is time to clean the filter.

The second most common problem is also due to pool filters. Old filters have a tendency for the inside piping to erode and break apart. Over time lots of chemicals are passed through a filter which wears the plastic down. If you see sand or DE in your pool that is due to a broken finger within the filter. Usually the cost of repairs on the filter at that point exceed the cost of simply replacing the filter.

The third most common of our pool repairs is calcium removal. Over time swimming pools leave a white ring around the pool wall. The ring is a result of calcium in your water and chemicals that erodes onto your walls.

The good news about calcium buildup is that it does not have much of a negative affect on your pool - it simply looks bad. Still, aesthetics are important to many people so they want the white line removed. Removing the white line is a labor intensive process using glass beads and heavy equipment - so it unfortunately not a job for your typical pool owner.

Good luck - hopefully your needs are simply. Let us know if you need some advice.
