Each and every region of the country has its own environmental challenges when it comes to pool care. But one thing that is common across the nation is making sure your swimming pool is free of debris and other air borne hazards.
There are certain things that must be done to protect your investment and make sure your pool is always in the best possible shape. Let's call these the "good habits"...
- Remove Floating Debris
- Check the Filter Traps
- Review the Automatic Timer
- Test the Water
- Occasionally Shock
Remove Floating Debris - Leaves, pine needles, and small branches can expose the water to the possibility of algae infestation. It's simple - if you see it floating in your water, get it out.
Check the Filter Traps - Next to your pump and motor there is generally a clear lid on a filter trap. These lids just twist off. Usually you can just use your hands, but sometimes they may require a wrench or tool supplied with the equipment. Be sure they are clear of debris and water flows through well.
Review the Automatic Timer - As far as the pool pump goes, most of them can be set on a timer to save you time. Check the timer occasionally so that it is running at least 10-12 hours a day during the summer so that the pump is working and doing its job well.
Test the Water - Test the water at least once a week to be sure the chemical levels are correct and safe for swimmers. Chlorine isn't the only chemical that has to be kept at the correct levels.
Occasionally Shock - Sometimes pool water needs to be treated with shock to get rid of a pesky algae problem. In the greater Phoenix area it is especially a good idea to shock the pool after each monsoon (during monsoon season).
The above are simply good habits to get into. Of course taking care of the pool appropriately goes beyond just these habits. You will need to adjust chemistry, deep clean the pool, and vacuum the sides, floor, ladder, and steps.
Good pool care takes a good amount of time. Diligence and attention to detail are necessary for keeping your pool ready for action and a source of enjoyment for years to come.
But on a hot, sunny day it all is worth the effort.
