Acid Wash - Why & How To Do It

An acid wash is done to clean a pool's floor and walls that are stained. They are generally needed every few years in order to keep a pool looking pristine. Here's what you need to perform an acid wash:

  • Muriatic Acid
  • Plaster Bright White
  • Steel Brush
  • One Gallon Water Can
  • Lots of Caution

USE CAUTION: You are messing with Muriatic Acid. This is the real deal. It is dangerous to inhale the fumes and it will burn your skin if it touches your body. Not to mention it will destroy your clothes too. This procedure should be done by a professional and is not recommended by an individual - so be extremely careful.

Mix: To start you mix 1/2 water and 1/2 Muriatic Acid in the water can with a cap full of Plaster Bright White.

Water: Water the sides of the pool and the floor so that it is always moist prior to adding the above solution.

Apply & Scrub: Apply the solution to a section of the wall and scrub profusely. The ratio of acid to water in the solution must be adjusted based on the surface of the pool. Do not let the solution sit at the bottom of the pool - it must be pumped out at all times.

Proper training and safety equipment is always recommended. Call your local professional for additional advice and assistance.
