There are several steps to testing your water.
First, you must buy either:
- A Test Kit, or
- Test Strips
Almost any test kit should do. They generally look like the following:

Test kits involve filling a container with a specified amount of your pool's water. Then adding specified drops of the chemicals in the kit. You then compare the resulting color of the water with a provided chart.
Each test kit is a little different, so make sure you follow the directions specific to that kit.
Another option is to purchase testing strips. They are much faster and easier to use. The downfall is that they are less accurate than using test kits. Test strips generally come in a round container such as seen below.

You simply take one strip out of the container, dip it in your water, wait 15 seconds, then compare the resulting colors with the colors on the back of the container. It's extremely straightforward.
Hopefully that helps you understand the basics of how to test your water. For more details on appropriate levels and chemicals to add click to read the additional articles.
