There are many chores in life that may consume your time. Swimming pool cleaning could easily be one.
The good news is that the basics of pool cleaning are fairly straightforward. There are three main aspects to pool cleaning:
- Pool water balancing - such as adding chlorine
- Pool water movement - to avoid stagnant water
- Pool water filtration - to clean the water
Each one of these aspects if also pretty easy to understand. The not so good news is that acquiring the equipment and in-depth knowledge in each of these pool cleaning subjects may be hard to attain.
If you are a "do-it-yourself" type of person then it is definitely possible to do your own pool cleaning. You start by buying a water chemistry test kit.
Up front you need to check your water daily, and maybe even hourly. You need to make sure your alkalinity, your pH, and your Chlorine levels are all in the proper ranges.
These ranges vary a bit depending on a few factors, such as your city's weather. And some pool companies will give you ranging advice. But generally speaking you want your:
- alkalinity - between 80 - 120
- pH - between 7.4 - 7.6
- chlorine - between 1-3
The hard part is how to adjust each of these factors when your water chemistry is out of these ranges. Notice that you are dealing with pool chemicals. These are real chemicals, including acids that can burn your skin and damage your lungs if inhaled.
This warning is not to be taken lightly. Just be extremely careful when dealing with your water chemistry.
The pool chemicals involved in adjusting these values include muriatic acid, soda ash, and many more. Please read other articles on this site, talk to your local pool store, or call your pool service company for detailed information.
Of course pool cleaning can be done on regular basis done by a professional pool service company. This will not only make your life and your pool much cleaner, you no longer need to worry about chemicals, manual labor, or the safety of your pool water.
Using a pool cleaning company typically means you pay a monthly fee. In return they provide all of the chemicals, balance your water, and they keep the pool sparkling clean.
The other item to note is that pool service companies buy chemicals in bulk at wholesale rates. That means you may come close to spending the same amount on your own chemicals as it is to hire someone to clean your pool and add chemicals for you.
What is most important is that you do pool cleaning. Dirty water leads to disease, mosquitoes, and other undesirable inserts. And green pools are even against the law in some municipalities.
Do yourself a favor. Keep the skin and eye irritation for those that don't take care of their pools. Keep your own pool clean and enjoy the great benefits of a sparkling clean swimming pool.
Good luck and enjoy your swimming...
