Ahhh...the nightmare is true, you have a green pool.
Where did it come from, what caused it, what's floating in my swimming pool? It's called an algae bloom. It comes in different forms, but they all love to grow and expand faster than you could grow a bean sprout. They comes fast, expand faster, and leave you with a green pool.
Algae comes in three types:
- Green Algae
- Mustard Algae
- Black Algae
All three will give you a green pool. Algae generally eats phosphates in your pool, thus you will find phosphate removers available for sale to try and kill the food source.
Green Algae is the most common. It is usually caused by poor filtration and poor water circulation. It floats freely in water and it may cling to walls. It significantly reduces water clarity and produces a greenish cloudiness in the water.
Mustard (or Yellow) Algae clings to walls and is generally found in shady areas of your pool. It can form into sheets and can be very difficult to completely remove. Chlorine alone will not take care of it. You must attack yellow algae with a proper algaecide.
Black Algae is the toughest to combat. It has strong roots that are protected by a tough outer layer. You will find black or blue spots that are circular and around the size of dime. You must scrub the head off black algae and kill the roots - it's a tough and draining process.
