How Long Until My Green Pool is Back to Blue?

Green Pool No Comments

The worst pool nightmare has come true.  Your swimming pool has turned green. We won’t worry about the reason: neglect, laziness, or worse.  It’s time to focus on the solution.

So many people ask how long does it take to fix the algae problem?  Everyone wants the job done today.  Some are unwilling to accept anything short of a couple of days.  Well, here’s the truth…

It depends.

Ah, I knew you would hate that answer.  Don’t worry there is more to back it up.  There are three filter types: cartridge, sand, and DE.

Each of those filters removes a different level of debris from the water at a different rate.  That’s one of the main reasons the time to fix a green pool varies so much.  Generally speaking, a DE or cartridge filter can get your pool back blue after 48 hours.  A sand filter may take closer to a week.

All of those times are assuming you have your water balanced, your phosphate level low, and you added an algaecide that killed the algae depending on the type.  And of course you have to have vacuumed out and brushed the pool sides very well.

So that’s the answer in just a short period.

Good luck - keep the pool blue!

How does Pool Equipment Work?

Pool Equipment 1 Comment

Good news - your pool is easier to understand than your car. Still afraid, don’t be. Here is a quick and dirty guide on how your pool equipment works.

Keeping a pool clean revolves around three main points.

  1. Chemicals,
  2. Circulation, and
  3. Filtration

Let’s take a quick stab at each of the three. Your chemicals kill the bacteria and bad stuff in your pool water. That’s why you need to keep your water balanced…so that the chlorine works. But once the bad stuff is dead in the water what happens?

That’s where circulation comes into play. The debris in your water must be circulated out of the pool. Your pool pump & motor is what moves the water around the pool and through the pipes back to the filter. So now that the water has moved out of the pool what happens?

It gets filtered (how did you guess). Filtration is the process of removing the debris (or dead stuff) from your water and then returning clean water back to your pool. The filter basically collects the debris and then the pump & motor circulates the clean water out of the other end of the filter.

The clean water flows back through seperate pipes into the return jets in the pool.

That’s it. In a nutshell your pool has a pump & motor (one piece), a filter, and pipes.

Of course this is a little bit simplified, but not too much. You can always find out more about any of these subjects by visiting more about pool equipment.

Is Pool Service Worth the Cost?

You just parked your car after a stressful, and long, day of work.  All you need is some rest and relaxation, but your stomach is making noises unheard of in the natural world. You have no choice but to make food, clean up the pots and pans, and take an attempt at watching some mediocre television show without the next interuption.  Before you know what happened you are in your car on the way to work again.

That’s the grind.  And you only have two “free” weekend days for actual relaxation each week.

Do you really want to worry about more chores?  Leave the manual labor and the handling of dangerous chemicals to experts.  Besides, cleaning your swimming pool is similar to mowing the lawn…it’s a pain in the butt week after week.

Besides, with the cost of pool chemicals these days using a pool service almost pays for itself.  The reason is that pool cleaners can buy bulk chemicals at low costs.  If you find a good pool cleaner those cost savings will carry onto you.

So the price you have been shelving out for water chemistry can now go towards chemicals and a service to clean your pool for you.

When to Perform Your Own Pool Repairs

Pool Repairs No Comments

When it’s time to consider repairs to your swimming pool you may want to consider handling the job on your own.

There are a few things to consider before making that decision.

First, you need to have the knowledge to fully assess the situation.  Do you really know what is wrong?  Do you have the time to get the parts or materials to make the repair?  Are you physically able to make the fix on your own?

If you can’t fully assess the situation perhaps your local pool supply store can help you figure out what’s wrong.  Of course that may require multiple trips to the store, so make sure you have set aside a Saturday or perhaps a full weekend for the job.

Finally, if you know what is wrong and you have the supplies and the knowledge to fix the problem there is one last item to consider. ..

Do you have the equipment?

Some fixes require expensive machinery to make a one-time fix.  If that is the situation you have found yourself contemplating it may be best to abort and pay a cheaper price to have a professional to come out.

Besides, then you can spend your Saturday watching football instead of making your 4th trip to the pool supply store.
